Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth - Ethically and Environmentally
Credit: David Montgomery/CityLab

Ah, the fall and winter holidays, when our thoughts turn to... chocolate. We all know that as consumers, individuals and local governments alike can choose sustainable and ethically-sourced products. This month, we're focusing on the role local governments can play in making an environmental impact through the purchasing choices they make.

But we figured we'd lead with something a little... sweeter. Here's a scorecard that not only rates the good, the bad, and the yucky in terms of chocolate brands, but explains those logos we see on candy bar labels.

Green Communities Spotlight
In 2014, the City of Norcross installed a dance space in front of the stage at Thrasher Park. The pavers chosen for this project contain 37% recycled content and diverted nearly five tons of waste away from a landfill, as calculated by the manufacturer. Furthermore, since these pavers are made of recycled content, their manufacture requires 81% less energy - which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 3,420 pounds - compared to virgin material pavers.
