Five Georgia Cities Receive EPA Brownfield Cleanup Funding

Making sure that land is properly utilized within city limits is an important part of good urban design and high quality of living, but land can't be used when it is contaminated with hazardous materials from previous uses. Five different local governments within Georgia received grant funding from the EPA this year to clean up contaminated brownfield sites within their cities and put the land to better use.

The City of Chamblee is one of the five local governments receiving EPA brownfield funds. The city's public works building, pictured above, is already located on a brownfield.

Measure 65: Government Facility at a Brownfield
Douglas County recycled a brownfield site - literally - but turning it into a county recycling facility after clean up and remediation. On top of handling solid waste management needs, the site is also home to fleet management and animal control facilities. Douglas County's re-purposing of the site into a multi-use municipal center displays sound land use practices and prevents undisturbed land from being paved or otherwise developed.
